Lyricist HAL DAVID died yesterday. His partnership with BURT BACHARACH created many of American music’s new standards. His direct style complimented Bacharach’s tempo changes and lush arrangements so well. I read this morning that he was quoted as saying he felt “songs should be like little films, told in 3-4 minutes.” I think of songs like “Are You There With Another Girl” or “Checkout Time” and that is exactly what they are like. It’s hard to narrow it down (and harder yet to find good versions), but here are just a few of the best interpreters of his lyrics.
Possibly my favorite BACHARACH-DAVID tune, absolutely nailed by Dionne. This is a movie, and that arrangement makes the despair in the lyrics come to life.
